The City University of New York seeks an exceptional educator in human services to become a founding faculty member for its New Community College (NCC). Scheduled to open in Manhattan in 2012, the centerpiece of the New Community College s educational model is an integrated first-year curriculum that builds the skills necessary for success in college-level work. In addition to human services, the college will open with majors in business administration, information technology, health information technology, liberal arts, and urban studies, and will also develop interdisciplinary tracks within those majors.
This tenure-track or tenured appointments (with rank depending on experience and qualifications) will begin as early as the fall of 2010. Prior to the opening of the college, the faculty member will develop the program of study in human services, and serve as part of a core team for defining overall instruction in an institution dedicated to rethinking community college education, and especially to increasing student retention and graduation.
It is essential that candidates have demonstrated the capacity to work with other faculty in such activities as developing courses, learning communities, and faculty development initiatives. They must be comfortable crossing disciplinary boundaries, because they will be expected to develop content and teach in one of the interdisciplinary tracks, as well as in Human Services. Above all, founding faculty must be innovative and inspiring teachers, themselves inspired by their participation in a re-conception and re-creation of college instruction.
Successful applicants will have:
- A PhD or other terminal degree in a field/discipline clearly relevant to Human Services, including Social Work, Public Health, Psychology, or Sociology, as well as Human Services;
- An understanding of community college students assets and challenges;
- Strong leadership experience or potential in key areas, among which are: competency-based assessment; e-portfolios; teaching under prepared students;
- A commitment and ability to take full advantage of a technology-rich environment;
- Ability to form partnerships with the public or private sectors.
Prior to NCC s opening, successful candidates will:
- Lead the development of curricula, learning objectives, assessments;
- Oversee and participate in the formation and work of collaborative faculty teams;
- Participate in the development of appropriate policies and governance structures for the NCC along with NCC leadership;
- Be a member of the faculty of an existing CUNY community college until the NCC opens, teaching one course per semester while working actively on establishing the NCC.
Qualification Requirements: A Ph.D. or other terminal degree is required for an appointment to all professoriate ranks. Degree must be in the discipline/field indicated above.
