The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) Office of the Chancellor invites nominations and applications for the position of Chief of Staff.

This individual serves as a member of the Chancellor s Executive Staff and is the principal aide and adviser to the Chancellor, representing the Chancellor to internal and external constituencies, as required. The Chief of Staff typically will not hold a formal, functional role outside of the Chancellor s Office, but in fulfilling his or her responsibilities he or she will work closely with the Provost, Vice Chancellors, and other senior administrators in all operating divisions of the University.

The Chief of Staff employs experienced judgment and handles responsibilities with both discretion and independence. He or she is a self-motivated professional who makes independent decisions concerning a wide range of topics in all aspects of University operations. The Chief of Staff interprets and follows policies and guidelines of the institution, Board of Governors, Board of Trustees, and the University of North Carolina General Administration, as well as relevant policy and law of the nation, state, and local governments. Consultation with the Chancellor, Executive Staff, and/or governing board leadership is sought when necessary. This individual must exhibit the highest degree of integrity and professionalism. When discharging his or her responsibilities, personal discretion is critical. While supporting an environment where transparency is highly valued, this individual will nonetheless also work on a regular basis with confidential information.

The Chief of Staff must execute a wide range of assignments efficiently and effectively. Major responsibilities of the Chief of Staff include the following:

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Liaison with members of the UNCG Executive Staff and other senior administrators, Faculty Senate, Staff Senate, and the Student Government Association.
Manage the strategic agenda for the Chancellor and university, working with other Executive Staff members and senior administrative leadership to develop the Chancellor s action plans, track projects and monitor status, and ensure implementation of the Chancellor s directives and initiatives.
Play a significant role in implementing policies and procedures (including responsibility for the University Policy Manual).
Serve as the principal liaison with the UNCG Board of Trustees, coordinating and staffing Board of Trustees meetings, committee meetings, retreats, and special projects.
Maintain effective communications with UNC General Administration and the UNC Board of Governors to ensure coordination and preparation of materials for Administrative Council and Board of Governors meetings.
Manage the flow of internal and external communication for the Chancellor s Office, including development of protocols for scheduling, correspondence, e-mail, tracking, and filing.
Coordinate drafting and preparation of speeches, presentations, and documents for use by the Chancellor on and off campus (including State of the Campus Address, Chancellor s Annual Report, and others).
Manage the Chancellor s Office budget and support recruitment of senior administrative/executive personnel as required.
Manage the Chancellor s Office staff, including setting expectations, training, staff development, and annual evaluations.
Lead/complete special projects and other assignments, as required.

Qualifications

Required candidate qualifications include a proven record of leadership in administrative/management positions of increasing responsibility and successful experience in building and working with teams. The candidate selected for this senior-level post will possess a problem-solving orientation and the ability to seize opportunities and drive change. Candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to one s professional responsibilities; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing, on the telephone, and in person; demonstrated ability to fully utilize workplace technologies; and a demonstrated ability to adapt to a fast-paced, diverse, and rapidly changing work environment. A collaborative work style, well developed organizational skills, and a productive work ethic are essential. A bachelor s degree is required; a graduate or professional degree is preferred, as is a background in strategic planning and project management.

Compensation

The salary for this FLSA-exempt position will be competitive and dependent upon the qualifications of the selected candidate.
