Job Description: East Carolina University is pleased to announce the search for the Founding Dean of the Honors College. The Dean of the Honors College reports directly to the Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs.
East Carolina University is the third largest institution in the 16-member University of North Carolina system with an enrollment of over 27,700 students. ECU offers 104 bachelor's degree programs, 73 master's degree programs, 2 first-professional programs (MD, DDS), and 18 doctoral programs in eight professional colleges, the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, the Brody School of Medicine, and the recently established School of Dentistry. ECU is located in Greenville, NC, a diverse and progressive city of more than 79,000 that is within two hours driving distance of the Atlantic coast to the east and the Research Triangle area of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill to the west.
The Dean of the Honors College will be responsible for providing vision and dynamic leadership for the Honors College at East Carolina University. The Dean will establish goals and strategic objectives for all aspects of the Honors College mission, supervise and coordinate the work of the college's administration, plan and manage the budget, coordinate curricular development, ensure the efficacy of comprehensive data-collection systems, recruit faculty to teach Honors College courses and serve on committees, define Honors College admission standards, expand recruitment efforts and strengthen student retention, undertake fund-raising and alumni relations, and represent the Honors College on and off campus. The Dean will have the opportunity to teach Honors College courses and meet on a frequent basis with Honors students. The Dean will facilitate the development of new programs related to ECU's strategic plan, work closely and collaboratively with other Deans and appropriate offices across campus, and execute other functions as directed by the Provost.
Minimum Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a terminal degree from an appropriately accredited institution and a record of distinction in teaching and research sufficient for a tenured appointment at ECU. The position requires a commitment to excellence in Honors education and a clear vision of the role of an Honors College within a large public university. The successful candidate will have an inclusive, transparent, and collaborative leadership style and an ability to inspire and lead Honors College staff and faculty. The position requires administrative experience at the departmental level or higher; demonstrated experience in strategic planning, budget administration, and advancement/fundraising; a record of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level; and an understanding of global and interdisciplinary approaches to Honors education. The Dean of the Honors College will work closely with administrators, faculty, staff, and students across the wide range of academic fields at ECU. Preference will be given to candidates with a record of leadership in an Honors College, Honors Program, or other initiatives serving academically talented undergraduate students.
