Job Description: The Chief of Oral-Maxillofacial Pathology (OMP) in the School of Dentistry is responsible for leading and managing the OMP Unit of the dental school. This unit is within the Section of Diagnostic Sciences of the Division of General Dentistry. The OMP unit works in close cooperation with the Offices of Academics Affairs, Clinical Affairs, and Dental Education and Informatics and to support the School's programs and initiatives. In addition, the unit works closely with other Schools and Colleges of East Carolina University and other components of the University of North Carolina, as well as local/regional educational and clinical programs. It also works closely with the University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina.
The Chief of OMP participates in hiring, mentoring and professional development of the faculty and staff within in the unit. The Chief also provides coordination of didactic and clinical activities among the clinical disciplines in general and oral-maxillofacial pathology. The Chief coordinates the development and implementation of the OMP taught to the dental students and in the School's residency programs.
Specific duties include:
Recruitment, hiring, and mentoring of the faculty and staff in the OMP unit.
Working closely with the Chair of General Dentistry and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in curriculum development and implementation related to general and oral-maxillofacial pathology.
Working closely with the Chair of General Dentistry and the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in the development and implementation of the clinical and academic components of the electronic dental record related to pathology.
Working closely with the Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics and other informatics personnel to optimize the use of technology to support the division's teaching programs.
Developing programs to involve dental students and residents in research activities.
Coordination of OMP didactic and clinical activities with Section Chief of Diagnostic Sciences, the Chair of General Dentistry, and the Associate Deans for Academic and Clinical Affairs.
Coordination of all academic programs among the clinical disciplines within the OMP unit in the school and at the community services learning centers.
Conduct basic and/or clinical research, and other scholarly activities that will help qualify for appropriate promotion.
Develop and deliver continuing education programs related to OMP.
Develop, market and operate a regional, or even more broadly based, OMP biopsy service.
Maintain OMP facilities and record keeping that fully comply with state and national standards.
Coordination of accreditation and other program documentation as needed.
Responding to local and national requests for information and documentation related to the unit's didactic and clinical programs.
Participating in budget planning for the division and ensuring that staffing, equipment, and funding are appropriate for the mission requirements as they relate to OMP.
Seeking to serve on committees and boards for state/federal government agencies, professional societies and within the school.
Assisting the Chair of General Dentistry and the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in quality assurance and improvement, and compliance efforts.
Responding to assignments from the Chief of Diagnostic Sciences, the Chair of General Dentistry, and the Dean of the School of Dentistry essential to unit's and school's operations.
Attending meetings and representing the School in internal and external venues as requested by the Chair of General Dentistry or the Dean.
Representing the School to external constituencies as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications: Required Qualifications
DDS or DMD (or equivalent) from an appropriately accredited institution with expertise in dental education.
American or Canadian Board certification in OMP (or educationally qualified for OMP board certification, if less than 2 years since OMP certification).
Broad knowledge of issues in dental education.
Commitment to and evidence of building teams in planning and to identify and resolve problems.
Eligibility for dental licensure in North Carolina (a NC dental license must be secured within the first year of employment).
Commitment to conducting basic and/or clinical research, and other scholarly activities that will help qualify for appropriate promotion.
Preferred Qualifications
Commitment to evidence-based teaching and practice.
Experience in community outreach activities.
Willingness to apply academic experiences of contemporary dental education and traditional educational values to the Community Services Learning Center model.
