Tufts University invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. The Dean is the chief academic officer of the School of Arts and Sciences and is responsible for the quality, conduct and coordination of academic affairs throughout the School. The School of Arts and Sciences has 4157 full-time undergraduate students, 779 full-time graduate students, 220 part-time graduate students, 347 full-time and 246 part-time faculty. The Dean reports to the Provost, and working with the Provost, is responsible for the academic quality of the School.
THE UNIVERSITY
Founded in 1852, Tufts is a privately endowed, coeducational research university with a total student body of approximately 9531, a faculty of 1227 and staff of 2982. Tufts offers undergraduate, graduate and professional education in eight schools on three campuses in the greater Boston area and at its European Center in Talloires, France. The University is committed to first-rate scholarship, excellent teaching, and preparation for leadership.
THE POSITION
With the Provost, the Dean is responsible for: (1) ensuring the quality of undergraduate and graduate education and research in the School of Arts and Sciences; (2) with the faculty, overseeing the recruitment, development and promotion of faculty; (3) collaborating with the Deans of the other Schools in building synergetic partnerships; (4) with the Dean of Engineering, overseeing student functions shared by the two Schools, including Admissions, Athletics, Student Life, Student Services, and Undergraduate Education; and (5) securing resources to ensure success of the School. The dean is a member of the University’s academic leadership team, which is focused on continually raising the academic strength and reputation of the University.
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates should have: a distinguished record of scholarly excellence and experience in leading and managing complex academic organizations; the ability to articulate and demonstrate a strong commitment to the value of undergraduate and graduate education and research; and the leadership skills to convince others to support a strong university vision. Candidates should also have demonstrated experience in consultation and consensus-building, strong communication and listening skills, a proven ability to mobilize diverse groups to work to achieve common goals, and experience in enhancing diversity at all levels.
