Virginia Commonwealth School of Medicine seeks an
accomplished administrative leader to serve jointly as the
Department Administrator for the Department of Human &
Molecular Genetics (HMG) and the Chief Administrative Officer
of the Virginia Institute of Molecular Medicine (VIMM).

The Department of Human and Molecular Genetics has a
tripartite mission in: research on hereditary, mutation, and
environmental impacts on human health; graduate education
programs, and clinical diagnoses of genetic disorders. The
department has an annual operating budget of approximately
$8 million with 28 faculty. The Virginia Institute for Molecular
Medicine focuses on the application of basic science research
in genetics, bringing together a multi-disciplinary team of
researchers focused on developing effective treatments and
cures for debilitating diseases, such as cancer and
neurodegeneration.

Reporting primarily to the Chair of the HMG Department, this
individual will hold an administrative/professional faculty
position and will lead all the financial and administrative
operations of the Department and the VIMM. Specifically, the
individual will supervise a staff responsible for research
administration (including pre- and post-award), faculty
recruitment and credentialing, financial management, human
resources, clinical services, front end department revenue
cycle, communications, strategic planning, and space planning
for both the Department and the Institute. The individual will
also have a secondary reporting relationship with the Associate
Dean of Finance and Administration and the Executive Director
of MCV Physicians (MCVP), the physician practice plan. This
is an exciting opportunity to join an entrepreneurial Chairman
with ambitious plans to build and grow the HMG Department
and the VIMM.

With a minimum of 8-10 years of progressive experience in
managing business operations in an academic medicine and/or
research-intensive environment, s/he must demonstrate an indepth
understanding of business management of an academic,
clinical, or research unit with particular strengths in budget
development, contracts management, financial reporting, and
strategic planning. A proven track record in matrix management
and strong financial management, research administration and
clinical program development and management is critical to this
role.
