Chemistry Instructor

Rock Valley College is currently seeking a full-time nine-month, tenure-track Chemistry Instructor to begin August 2010.

Required Qualification: An earned masters degree with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in chemistry, to teach introductory and general courses in inorganic and organic chemistry.

Desired Qualifications: Education beyond the masters level is desirable. Ph.D. preferred; recent teaching experience in organic chemistry as well as a commitment to the mission of the community college and interest in involvement in Division and College initiatives are desired.

Rock Valley College, a comprehensive community college located in Rockford, Illinois, serves a diversified metropolitan area of over 370,000 people. Rockford is centrally located in northern Illinois, within 90 minutes of Chicago as well as Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin. The College is the principal institution of post-secondary education in the region. RVC is an educational leader in providing quality, accessible, lifelong learning opportunities, cultural enrichment, and support for economic and technological development.

The successful candidate will provide evidence of strong teaching ability in chemistry and must be comfortable with a variety of students, including many having meager science and math preparation. The successful candidate must also be willing to interface with and offer courses in conjunction with growing and changing industrial and engineering technology programs on campus. The job will also involve working with technology faculty and local industry in designing programs in these areas. While there is no requirement to conduct research, opportunities for doing so are available in the area, and any of these that would involve students would be particularly welcome.

Conditions of Employment: This is a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track position to begin August 2010, with the tenure decision in three years. Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and group life insurance plans are offered and State Universities Retirement System (SURS) administered retirement plan. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Optional overload and summer teaching assignments are possible, depending upon availability. Flexibility in work schedule is necessary. Interest in serving a diverse student population is essential.
