Harvard University, which will celebrate its 375th anniversary in 2011, is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. Founded 16 years after the arrival of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, the University has grown from nine students with a single master to an enrollment of more than 21,000 degree candidates, including undergraduates and students in 11 principal academic units, ten faculties and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. Working with senior academic and administrative leaders and with technology professionals across the institution, Harvard s University Chief Information Officer (UCIO) provides leadership for the strategy, technical planning, project governance, organizational management and financial budgeting and control of technology programs which focus on the University s academic, administrative and infrastructure technology needs. In this newly configured and expanded role, the UCIO has responsibility for those applied technologies that support the teaching and research mission of the University and provides particular and direct oversight to the technology functions of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS). Along with academic, administrative and infrastructure technologies, the University Chief Information Officer also provides support to the research computing efforts of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. In addition, the office of the UCIO provides various computing services to schools and departments as well as Harvard affiliates.
In collaboration with other technology professionals in the Schools, Central Administration and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the University Chief Information Officer encourages technical innovation and the development of robust, dependable and common infrastructure services and facilitates cross-University collaboration with the IT professionals in the Harvard Schools and Departments. The UCIO manages a staff of technology professionals in both the Central Administration and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Current staff numbers 470 and the 2009 operating budget represents $127M of technology investment.
Specific experience and qualifications for Harvard University s Chief Information Officer include fifteen years of increasing and broad-based responsibility in the Information Technology field. Ideal experience includes an outstanding record of leadership, follow-through and proven results in information technology in the higher education, not-for-profit or industry sectors. The ideal candidate will be highly consultative, a strong manager of people, projects and processes, and an effective communicator. He/she will possess a strong customer service orientation, superb influencing skills, and a proven track record of setting and implementing a strategic vision for technological applications which support a highly diverse and demanding user community
