The Office of College Advancement-with counsel from the Board of Trustees, the Alumni Council, and other key volunteers-is evaluating its Alumni Relations programs in order to innovate for the future. The goal is to develop a cohesive strategic plan for alumni engagement, one which is thoughtful, innovative, and resourceful, and which will strengthen the bonds between alumni and the College. One key area of the strategic plan is to increase involvement and participation of alumni of color and international alumni. All alumni are an integral part of the Bates community and the College—the students, the faculty, the staff, and fellow alumni—benefits in meaningful ways from their involvement.
Bates is recognized for its inclusive social character and progressive tradition. Since its founding in 1855 by Maine abolitionists, Bates has welcomed men and women from diverse racial, ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds. In the 21st century, Bates strives to create a broadly diverse and deeply inclusive community that prepares students and supports its graduates' full and active participation in a global society. Today, this entails working attentively with all alumni to create meaningful and mutually-beneficial connections to the College and to alumni communities.
The Assistant Director works as a member of the 11-person Alumni & Parent Programs team. Reporting to the Director of Alumni & Parent Programs, the Assistant Director—in conjunction with colleagues from Advancement and other College offices—will take on the project of developing a comprehensive program to achieve greater involvement of alumni of color and international alumni in the ongoing life of the College. The Assistant Director will implement a program of activities that result in the identification, recruitment, and retention of alumni of color and international alumni who will help the College design and participate in networks and programs that link alumni to students (as mentors and role models); that link alumni to one another; and that invites ongoing volunteerism and financial support of the College. The Assistant Director also manages the program and logistics for 2-3 annually assigned reunion classes as well as other projects as assigned. Travel and some weekend work is required. Confidentiality is absolutely necessary.
