The university provost is the chief academic officer of the university and reports directly to the president. The provost is responsible for the development and administration of academic programs and policies relating to instruction and curriculum; faculty appointment and performance; research and public service initiatives among faculty; and enrollment management. Reporting to the provost are the deans of the colleges of Basic and Applied Sciences, Business, Education and Behavioral Science, Liberal Arts, Mass Communication, University Honors, Graduate Studies, and Continuing Education and Distance Learning, as well as the Dean of the Library, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Vice Provost for Enrollment Management, Vice Provost for Research, and the Vice Provost for International Affairs. The provost also presides over the Deans Council.
The size of the Division of Academic Affairs and the large number of units that report to the provost requires a leader with excellent communication skills and a demonstrated record of success as a senior academic administrator and manager. Other noted characteristics should include
An ability to effectively lead a diverse faculty and administrative and senior management team
A vision and administrative expertise to create and implement innovative academic initiatives
A commitment to high ethical standards and excellence in teaching, scholarship and research / creative activity and quality undergraduate and graduate education
Excellent organizational skills and outstanding interpersonal and advocacy skills with both internal and external constituents.
A commitment to diversity and inclusion as core values that enhance the educational process
Applicants must have credentials that would qualify for a tenured appointment at MTSU, including an earned doctorate, as well as
Ten (10) years experience and academic qualifications sufficient to support appointment to senior rank in an academic unit
Distinction in teaching, scholarship and research and/or creative activity
Significant academic experience in higher education with five years of total 10 years in an administrative management capacity at the level of dean or above
Demonstrated record of leadership, planning and organizational skills and experience in developing and administering large, diverse budgets and broad, complex programs
Knowledge and experience with strategic planning processes and familiarity with national trends and development in higher education
