Founded in 1956, the University of South Florida is a public research university of growing national distinction. It is Florida's second largest and the nations ninth largest university in the country. In addition, it is one of the nations top 63 public research universities and is one of only three Florida public universities classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in the top tier of research universities; it ranks number 17 among the Best 366 Colleges in the nation for diversity according to The Princeton Reviews 2008 Guide. The university is one of only 39 four-year U.S. public colleges and universities (the only one in Florida) classified as Community Engaged. USF is the only Florida university - public or private - to receive this classification. More than 46,000 students are studying on campuses in Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota-Manatee, and USF Polytechnic in Lakeland. The University offers 217 degree programs at the undergraduate, graduate, specialty and doctoral levels, including the doctor of medicine. USF is a member of the Big East Athletic Conference.
