Provost

The Provost Search Committee seeks an individual with an outstanding record of innovative academic leadership, distinguished scholarship and teaching, and a passion for the liberal arts. The Provost will provide intellectual vision and strong academic leadership and is responsible for the academic program and budget, educational policy, academic appointments, and the stimulation of teaching and research. As the chief academic officer, the Provost serves as administrator-in-charge when the President is absent. The position becomes available on or about July 1, 2010.

Founded in 1845, Wittenberg is an independent, residential liberal arts college in Springfield, Ohio offering a rich liberal arts education dedicated to intellectual inquiry and wholeness of person within a diverse residential community. Reflecting its Lutheran heritage, Wittenberg challenges students to become responsible global citizens, to discover their callings, and to lead personal, professional, and civic lives of creativity, service, compassion, and integrity. Wittenberg is recognized nationally for its excellent faculty and commitment to undergraduate teaching and research. A series of new academic initiatives reflect the university s commitment to international engagement, interdisciplinary majors, and experiential learning. Wittenberg enrolls approximately 1900 students from 40 states and 26 nations, and has a full-time faculty of 145 members. The University is located in a residential area of Springfield, a city of 62,000 in a metropolitan area of 140,000 in southwestern Ohio that is easily accessible from Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati. Wittenberg hosts a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa and grants a total of forty two undergraduate majors, as well as a master s degree in education.

The search committee seeks an individual who will:

Articulate, embrace, and exemplify the values of a liberal arts education and the Wittenberg mission;
Bring to the position a notable record of classroom teaching experience and acknowledged scholarship commensurate with that of a senior faculty member;
Foster a healthy collegial environment among faculty, staff, and students by providing inspirational leadership, effective communication, and a commitment to diversity and justice;
Demonstrate confident and effective academic leadership, management, and administrative skills, and;
Promote the university s strategic plan in a manner that cultivates consensus around curricular innovation.
