Nature of Responsibilities
The Assistant Director serves on a three-person team that provides
career services for Master s and PhD students enrolled in The Graduate School or the Pratt School of Engineering. This position focuses equal effort on 1) career counseling, programs, and related education activities for students; and 2) relationships with employers, alumni and other stakeholders to expand both academic and alternative professional employment opportunities. This position reports to the Executive Director with additional oversight from the Associate Director.
Specific Duties
1. Counseling/Advising
a. Provide effective individual and group counseling for graduate
students to explore how their interests, abilities and values intersect with career possibilities.
b. Assist graduate students in mastering career decision-making processes, acquiring job-search skills, and examining life-work roles and goals. Provide advice in areas relating to the job search process such as academic search process vs industry, preparation, research, negotiation, and interviewing strategies.
2. Programming
a. Develop and implement programs that address the career development needs of graduate students with a focus on career exploration, experiential learning, employment or other similar need.
b. Plan and assist with Career Center events, e.g., Career Fairs and employer-sponsored events particularly those events targeted to graduate students.
3. External Relationships
a. Actively engage in the development and implementation of campus recruiting strategies as well as expansion of revenue generating and/or gift opportunities for the
Career Center.
b. Build and maintain critical relationships with employers, alumni, peer institutions and consortia colleagues (e.g., Graduate Career Consortium).
4. Assessment
a. Ensure that data necessary for assessment and trend research is gathered and compiled.
b. Analyze data, prepare reports and make presentations to support evidence-based decision-making.
5. Networks
a. Foster linkages with faculty and academic deans in specific academic disciplines.
b. Build and maintain constituent relationships across campus, including colleagues and student groups.
c. Build and maintain relationships with alumni who can advise students on careers and\ career-related topics.
6. Business Processes and Technology
a. Ensure that internal and stakeholder business processes are
effective and efficient.
b. Apply appropriate technology tools to ensure accuracy and efficiency in business process.
7. Professional involvement
a. Keep abreast of career and labor market information available through various resources.
b. Represent the Career Center on Division, University and professional association committees as appropriate.
c. Provide leadership to the professional community by developing and
promoting new employer initiatives at Duke. Understand and track peer initiatives and make recommendations for change consistent with the office mission.
Qualifications
Doctorate strongly preferred, Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Human Resources preferred, Bachelor's degree required
At least two years relevant post-degree experience in career development, employment recruiting or related field. Knowledge of academia, the work world and employment is essential. Understanding of higher education and the career needs of graduate students at highly selective institutions.

6. Experience with and understanding of appropriate technology solutions as applied to career development and college recruiting processes.
7. Understanding of basic assessment practices including data analysis and reporting.
8. Strong communication and interpersonal skills as applied to counseling, advising, stakeholder management, and presentations.
