DENTAL - CHAIR, SURGICAL SCIENCES (FACULTY POSITION)

Job Description: The Chair of the Department of Surgical Sciences is a senior member of the East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine leadership team with responsibility for leading and managing the School's Department of Surgical Sciences.

This department includes the dental specialties of Endodontology, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Periodontology and Emergency Dentistry.

The Department works in close cooperation with the Offices of the Vice Dean, Clinical Affairs, Dental Education and Informatics, Educational Support and Faculty Development, Research and Extramural Clinical Practices to support the School's programs and initiatives.

In addition, the Department works closely with other Schools and Colleges of East Carolina University and other components of the University of North Carolina, as well as local, regional and national educational and clinical programs.

The Chair of Surgical Sciences has the responsibility for the hiring, mentoring and professional development of the faculty within the Department.

The Chair provides overall coordination of didactic and clinical activities among the department's various clinical disciplines, and facilitates the development and implementation of the Endodontology, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Periodontology curriculum within the Doctor of Dental Medicine program.

The Chair collaborates with the residency program directors of the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD), General Practice Residency (GPR) and Pediatric Dentistry programs in providing dental surgical sciences education, training and support for residents.

Specific duties include:

Recruiting, hiring and mentoring of faculty within the Department of Surgical Sciences;

Working collaboratively with other members of the School's senior leadership team to advance the educational, research and service mission of the School;

Coordinating educational, research and service activities of departmental faculty, and ensuring faculty development and advancement and promotion;

Facilitating ongoing development and implementation of strong educational and clinical programs among the clinical disciplines within the department in Ross Hall and at the Community Service Learning Centers;

Collaborating with the Chair of the Department of General Dentistry and other faculty to ensure that students, residents and faculty are competent in the areas of implant planning, placement and restoration;

Working with departmental faculty and others to develop and deliver state-of-the-art continuing education programs Representing the department and the School of Dental Medicine at meetings and with external constituencies;

Actively participating in the school's faculty practice plan and strongly encouraging other department faculty to fully participate;

Performing other duties and assuming additional responsibilities as assigned by the Dean.

Fixed term or tenure track position available.


Minimum Qualifications: DDS or DMD (or equivalent) from an appropriately accredited institution

Eligibility for dental licensure in North Carolina

American Board certification (or eligibility) in Endodontology, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, or Periodontology

Broad knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues in dental education

A commitment to the general practice model of dental education

Clinical experience in dental education at the institutional level, working in development, implementation, evaluation and monitoring of departmental programs, supporting the attainment of the dental degree

Demonstrated record of increasing leadership responsibilities, preferably as a program director, division head, or chair

Commitment to evidence-based teaching and practice

A commitment to the mission of the School of Dental Medicine and to the Community Service Learning Center educational model
