Position Summary:
Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon, seeks an energetic and community conscious leader for one full-time English instructor position starting in September 2010. As the college does not employ a system of academic rank or advancement, English faculty hold the title of Instructor and, after three years of probationary status, move to regular status. The typical assignment for an English Instructor consists of two writing courses and one literature course each term during the academic year (with some variations).
The instructor for this position will teach a variety of writing and literature courses; however, a significant portion of his/her course load will beTechnical Writing. The English program instructors at Chemeketa work with students with a wide range of cultural backgrounds, language skills, and academic preparation. Instructors in the English program are expected to be active in the campus community, the college writing center, and in the program's administrative responsibilities.
The English program has long been a leader in innovative instruction at the college. English faculty have developed linked courses, learning communities, online courses, a writing center, and writing across the curriculum initiatives. Opportunities for innovation continue with college support for curriculum development and an array of technical resources, including instructional computer labs and an optional online web presence for all courses.

Physical Demands:
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Even though weight lifted may be negligible, it may be rated light work if frequent walking and/or standing is required.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Master's Degree in English from an accredited institution or equivalent (Equivalent degrees considered include: MA in Journalism with at least 24 hours of graduate course credit in composition and/or literature or MA in Linguistics with at least 24 hours of graduate course credit in composition and/or literature).

Two terms/semesters of experience teaching technical writing at the college level or one year of experience as a professional technical writer which includes at least one term of experience in teaching adults at the college level.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree in English with at least 6 credits of coursework in technical writing and at least 6 course credits in literature and/or composition theory/pedagogy.
Experience teaching a variety of composition and literature (since the position, while focused on technical writing, will also require teaching a variety of courses)
Ability to work effectively with students with a wide range of cultural backgrounds, language skills, and academic preparation
Evidence of active participation in program or department responsibilities

Duties/Essential Functions:
Teaches assigned classes in writing/literature following approved course outline
Prepares and develops materials for assigned classes
Incorporates an understanding and appreciation of diverse cultural perspectives
Meets all scheduled classes
Posts and maintains regularly scheduled office hours
Provides students with course syllabi
Maintains class records of grades and attendance
Reports individual academic grades when required
Volunteers time in the writing center
Attends and participates in program meetings and serves on program and college committees

Teaching assignment may include evening and week-end courses and the use of non-traditional delivery methodologies, .e.g. cable television and on-line/internet courses. Duty days may fluctuate from the traditional September-June schedule. Recently hired faculty are expected to participate in a new faculty orientation program. Some travel within the region may be required.
