COASTAL SOCIAL SCIENTIST

Job Description: The Institute for Coastal Sciences and Policy (ICSP) at East Carolina University invites applications for a tenure-track joint appointment at the assistant or associate professor level. We seek a PhD-level social scientist with strong research interests in social, behavioral, political, and institutional aspects of coastal change, such as population shifts, development, resource use and availability, climate change, and policy responses. Candidates should have solid grounding in the conceptual approaches and qualitative and quantitative methodologies of their discipline, experience collaborating with colleagues in the natural, social, and policy sciences, and enthusiasm for innovative research. A demonstrated familiarity with the application of quantitative modeling approaches would be an asset. A strong record of research, teaching, service, and publication are expected; post-doctoral and non-academic career experiences are desirable. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded research program; contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching at the master's and doctoral level, through the PhD Program in Coastal Resources Management; and provide service to the university, community, and profession. The joint appointment will be made between the Institute and an academic department appropriate to the candidate's discipline.

ECU is a member of the 16-campus University of North Carolina system with an enrollment of about 27,000 students, with over 5,500 pursuing graduate and professional degrees. It is located in a geographic region that is rich in estuaries, barrier islands, wetlands, and agricultural, fishery, and forest resources. Greenville's population of some 70,000 is located 85 miles east of Raleigh, the state capital, and is within easy driving distance of the Albemarle-Pamlico estuarine system, the state's extensive barrier islands (including the Outer Banks), and a full spectrum of pristine to highly developed coastal environments. Minimum Qualifications: Doctoral degree from an appropriately accredited institution in a social science discipline, established publication record and relevant work experience. Appointment is expected to be at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications.
